Ultrasonography
What is it?
High-frequency sound waves. Ultrasound waves can be bounced off of tissues using special devices. The echoes are then converted into a picture called a sonogram. Ultrasound imaging, referred to as ultrasonography, allows physicians and patients to get an inside view of soft tissues and body cavities, without using invasive techniques.
How do we use it?
Ultrasonography is a minimally-invasive diagnostic procedure commonly used to evaluate the abdominal organs . This tool can be used to establish a diagnosis, or monitor a medical condition. In addition, organ biopsies can be performed, which may help avoid a more invasive surgical procedure.
The information obtained from ultrasonography is complementary to radiographs, blood and urine testing (i.e. the "minimum database"); it often helps to determine the next diagnostic or therapeutic step in a patient's care.
