Dermatology

Dr. Patrick McKeever, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVD (Dermatology)

Dr. McKeever will be traveling around the state and once a month he will be seeing cases at Veterinary Specialty Center.

Dr. McKeever founded the veterinary dermatology program at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and served as the head and primary professor for 27 years. After leaving the University of Minnesota in 1998 he established Mckeever Dermatology Clinics Inc., a speciality referral practice.

After the American College of Veterinary Dermatology was established, Dr. McKeever became a diplomate by examination and has served on the long-range planning and appeals committees of that organization. He is a long-standing member of the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology and was its president from 1991-93. He has co-author of a problem-based book on veterinary dermatology for the small animal practitioner.

The primary hobby of Dr. McKeever is fishing as he grew up on an island in the middle of Lake of the Woods fifty miles from the nearest town or road. His grade school consisted of a one-room log cabin and there were never more than seven students in all eight grades. Dogs came to school with their masters and played outside while classes were being held.

Dermatology in Animal Veterinary Medicine

There are many skin diseases that affect animals including allergies, hormonal imbalances, ear infections, nail disease, and autoimmune, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases. These diseases often present with similar clinical signs. As a dermatology specialty clinic, we are trained and equipped to detect these subtle differences in clinical signs so that we can pursue the most effective diagnostic and treatment plans.

Skin testing is commonly performed to find out what an animal is allergic to in it's environment. Allergy shots are formulated to desensitize against these allergens.
