Advanced Services
Veterinary Emergency Service and Veterinary Specialty Center have available to our clients complete and immediate imaging via digital x-ray, ultrasound, and endoscopy. We also offer an extensive in house pharmacy and lab with all the latest drugs and tests to meet our patients needs.
However, our service doesn't stop at the big ticket items mentioned above. We are also equipped with the following smaller items which provide the supportive care needed to sustain a pets life or assist in a pets recovery. Below is a small sample of what we have available to assist your pet.
Ventilator:
A machine designed to mechanically move breathable air into and out of the lungs. It is a mechanism of breathing for a patient who is physically unable to breathe, or breathing insufficiently. It is also used in surgery to assist the patient in maintaining a consistent respiratory pattern and oxygen level.
Oxygen Concentrator and Oxygen Therapy:
The oxygen concentrator is a machine that converts room are into pure oxygen. It is portable and can follow the patient where ever they may need to go in the hospital. Oxygen therapy is as simple as the administration of oxygen. These two items are often used together. We can provide oxygen to a pet by one of the following methods.
Flow by:
Simply letting oxygen flow past the nose and the pet is allowed to breath it in freely.
Mask:
An oxygen mask is placed over the mouth and nose of the pet while oxygen flows freely. This is used on pets needing a higher oxygen concentration than those on flow by. We carry mask tiny enough to fit a small pocket and large enough to fit a Mastiff or Great Dane. Fire fighters in the Madison area are now carrying these pet masks with them on their trucks to assist pets found in fires.
Oxygen Chamber:
We have a variety of sizes of oxygen chambers from neonatal to small dog. Pets are placed within these units while oxygen fills the chamber. This is used on patients needing a higher concentration of oxygen with minimal stress of handling. It is also a good resource for the more fractious animals in need of assistance.
Nasal Oxygen:
For this procedure a small tube is inserted into the pets nostril and secured with a suture. If need be, a tube can be placed in both nostrils, providing an even higher level of oxygen. This procedure can be used on any size animal but really comes in handy in the larger dogs who will not fit into a chamber.
Isolette:
This is a unit used to house pets in need of heat therapy and or oxygen therapy. It is made of a hospital grade plastic viewable from all sides. It also has hand holes allowing us access to the patient without sacrificing the pets heat or oxygen level. This unit is often used for newborn puppies and kittens and hypothermia patients.
Isolation ward:
VES maintains a free standing independent Isolation ward to handle contagious or compromised patients. OSHA guidelines are followed for the handling and care of the pets placed within this unit. This ward not only protects the pets from disease but also protects the staff for the zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted to humans.
Bair hugger:
This is a forced air unit which circulates warm air through cloth channels surrounding the pet. It can be used to maintain the body temperature of a surgery patient or a hypothermia patient.
Crash Cart:
A crash cart is located in every building and on every floor. It is equipped with the necessary tools and drugs needed to revive and sustain a pets life. All of our staff are trained in pet CPR and work as a team when called into action to resuscitate a pet.
